Wawu!!! 50 Prison Inmates To Write 2018 UTME

December 14, 2017 0
No fewer than 50 prison inmates will sit for the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), according to an official.

The Principal, Ikoyi Prisons School, Mr Idris Ibikunle, disclosed this on Thursday in Lagos.

According to him, the school has prepared the inmates well for the examination as officials of the facility have stepped up efforts in ensuring an excellent performance.

“Right now, we are preparing about 50 of the inmates for the next UTME and by what I see, they are very determined to excel.

“We are yet to enroll them for the examination proper; we want to give a little more room for others interested so we can do the enrolment once.

“I am optimistic that we will enroll more than 50 of the inmates for the examination,’’ Ibikunle told NAN.

NAN recalls that earlier this year, 59 inmates were registered for the 2017 UTME out which 35 had their results released and are at various stages of admission placement to tertiary institutions.

The principal also said 40 inmates were being prepared for the newly introduced 2018 January/February diet of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates.

According to him, prisons officials were committed to ensuring that the inmates had nothing to lose, academically, despite their incarceration.

NAN recalls that the principal had, at the maiden edition of the facility’s Education Award ceremony recently in Lagos, said 20 of the inmates were running various courses in different disciplines at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).

He said they were posting impressive performances in their chosen fields, ranging from Criminology, Security and Peace Studies, Theology, Business Administration to Mass Communication

He, however, highlighted some constraints facing the school in the prison facility.

“We are in need of stationery as well as the establishment of a befitting Computer Based Test (CBT) centre for our external examinations.

“We, therefore, call for support from well-meaning Nigerians and organisations to join hands with us in ensuring that the dreams of these persons are kept alive,’’ he said.

Update! ASUU May Move To Resume Strike Action Tomorrow

October 31, 2017 0

The tertiary education sector is sitting on a time bomb. The Federal Government is yet to honour its agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

I don’t think the Federal Government wants ASUU to go on another strike but if this situation extends beyond the October 31 deadline, then ASUU will very likely go on strike again.

President of the association, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi had, in announcing the “conditional suspension” of the previous strike, said the action was taken after the union gave the Federal Government a deadline of the end of October to fulfill its promises.

We don’t want another strike, however short it may be. The universities and their students are yet to recover from the last one.

Exams that should have long been concluded are only being rounded off now. The holiday that is supposed to follow has been shortened. The academic calendar has been disrupted. We can’t afford to have further disruption of our academic calendar.

No one knows how many Nigerian students were involved in accidents and how many died on our bad roads when traveling to and from school at the commencement and cancellation of the last ASUU’s strike. We can’t afford to risk the lives of these students again.

Osun State Commissions UNIOSUN Road As Alakija Donates N250m To Project Completion

October 25, 2017 0

The Governor of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has described the situation where operators of Universities in Nigeria rely on subvention from the owners and burden students with humongous tuition fees as intellectual laziness.
The Governor observed this at the formal opening of the access road to the University of Osun (UNIOSUN), at the entrance to the university in Osogbo.
‎He held that Nigerian universities should adopt world best practices where schools‎ raise funds through endowments, grants and donations from the larger society, which is the primary beneficiary of university education.
‎The Chancellor of UNIOSUN, Chief Mrs Folorunso Alakija was said to have assisted the university with the sum N250 million, which was the exact amount they needed to complete the road project. ‎Aregbesola averred that university funding anywhere in the world is capital intensive and requires helps from philanthropist like Mrs Alakija to boost education system.
He commended Mrs Alakija’s gesture, ‎ saying it is a refreshing perspective on funding for education, particularly the university, which requires a huge financial outlay.
Aregbesola said: “Universities require a large amount for capital projects and not less sum for recurrent expenditure.
“In our intellectually lazy (or idea challenged) environment, the line of least resistance has largely been followed – which is to rely on subvention from the owners and burden the students with humongous tuition fees.
“But the best practices, as we see from other climes, are to raise funds through endowments, grants and donations from the larger society, which is the primary beneficiary of university education anyway.
“Universities also generate revenues through patents, royalties and other intellectual property materials. “This is why there is a huge gap between per capita spending on students by the Euro-American universities, compared to our own.”
The governor commended UNIOSUN for being on this same path of operating within the framework of intentional standard of running a tertiary institution. He stated that the university has been self-subsisting for some time now as government has stopped giving any subvention to it.
He added that universities all over the country must wake up to the economic realities of the present time and be creative in sourcing funds to ‎run their institutions. He also called on other people of good will to emulate the good gesture of Mrs Alakija by contributing to the growth and development of education in the state and country at large.
He equally tasked alumni of the educational institutions in Osun who have education background, to ‎support students of elementary and middle schools in the state as their own contributions to education development.
He continued: “The university has been responsible for generating its own revenue, even when we asked it to review tuition fees downward. “In light of dwindling revenue and rising cost, universities must be creative in sourcing for funds. The burden of funding education should be spread in the society.
“There are thousands of people who will gladly give money, build roads, donate buildings, endow chairs in the name of a cause, a relation etc. and do many more for education. In light of this, I must add that contribution is not limited to giving money.
“There are many alumni of our primary and secondary schools who have education background; they should support our students in basic education. “All they need to do is to volunteer to teach in any of our elementary and middle schools for one hour in a day in English, Mathematics and the Sciences. We need them as volunteers.
“I am therefore commending Dr Alakija for her kind gesture in helping the university to construct this road and for her other interventions in the institution. “She has etched her name in history and a grateful state, government and people will not forget her good deeds.‎”
In her remarks, the donor, Mrs Alakija, attributed the gesture towards the construction of the university’s access road to her immeasurable passion for education. She lamented on deplorable state of the nation’s education system, saying it is lamentable and disheartening that no Nigerian University made the list of the first 1000 universities in the world.
According to her: “The education system in Nigeria presently needs urgent assistance and unless there is a major overhaul, the future of the next generation of Nigerians will be bleak. “As we all know, education is very important for sustaining and developing people. With it, people acquire wisdom and knowledge. They build confidence and develop the ability to fend for themselves from what they have learnt.
“It is also both an instrument of stability and of change; stability in the sense that good traditions are documented, taught, imbibed and practiced; change because it prepares and equips people to meet new challenges. In the same vein, education is a tool for inculcating moral values in the citizens.
“‎The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Sustainable Development Agenda has identified 17 Global goals, which every nation of the world must strive to accomplish by 2030. “The 4th goal which is quality education, requires that inclusive and equitable quality education which promote lifelong learning opportunities be made available to all.
“Education is a vision my family and I do not take lightly. This is evidenced by the support we continue to give to students through our Rose of Sharon Foundation where almost 1,500 students benefit from our scholarship program up to university level and the same spirit of which also drove the completion of this project.
While calling on all to support education in the country, Alakija said the attainment of qualitative education will require all of us to pull resources together to make the difference the system so desperately needs.
‎In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Labode Popoola, applauded the philanthropic gestures of the donor, Dr. (Mrs) Folorunso Alakija, describing her as a seasoned philanthropist.
Professor Popoola recalled the steps taken by the management of the institution at constructing an access road to the university’s main campus, saying that the vision led the management of the institution to extend hands of help to the Chancellor.
‎According to him: “One of my first major activities on assumption of duties was a meeting to renegotiate the contract for the construction of this road. I bless the day, 22 March, 2017 when I led my Management Team to our Chancellor, Dr. (Mrs) Folorunso Alakija, in her Lagos Office as part of the preparation towards the 6th Convocation of our University.
“In my briefing, I lamented the state of the access road to our university and the challenge to raise the sum of N250 million to complete the road project, “But three days after the visit, we received the alert of the sum of two hundred and fifty million naira from the school chancellor and for this reason, the chancellor deserves our accolade. “She is always there for us, her unparalleled benevolence for the completion of this road project is highly commendable. Her unending passion to positively impact humanity is an inspiration for us as an institution.
The Chairman Governing Council of the University and Pro-Chancellor, Mallam Yusuf Ali, also commended the donor, Mrs Alakija, for being passionate about the plights of the institution.
He disclosed that the institution only paid N100 million out of N350 million‎ spent for the construction of the access road.

Mallam Ali however called on well-meaning Nigerians to see the need for supporting education by imbibing the philanthropic life style that could help to advance quality, qualitative and sound education in the country. “Government alone cannot bear the cost of financing education. Those who run institutions of higher learning should put on their thinking cap and be creative in sourcing for funds to develop these institutions.
“Also, an individual, whom God has materially endowed has shown by the example of our Chancellor, Dr. Folorunso Alakija, could make a lot of difference.
Where the managers of our resources act honestly, transparently and without corruption, men and women of goodwill who are endowed will be more readily disposed to help fund our educational system.‎”

The Touching Story Of UNILORIN Accounting Student (From Grass To Grace)

October 02, 2017 0

A Unilorin Accounting department graduate and Ex- president, with the name Amodu Saheed Adebayo shared with us his touching story on facebook, after verifying his graduation status on 29th of Sept 2017.

Read Touching story below:-

Life is like a swinging pendulum, it swings to wherever it wants.’

The gods of the land, must have conspired against my success. They must have been rebelling against my success for so long.

Why has destiny screwed me out of favour, even when they come? These were exactly my lines of thoughts, when I saw my name considered for a provisional admission. After three attempts of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board Examimation.

But, the finance to kiss the awaited door of the university seems to be a huge punch, like that of Mayweather, on me. Just some months at the place of my I.T placement(GTBank),

and now, welcomed with a congratulatory text of admission from the better by far University (University of Ilorin).

It was an ethical dilemma. I was left with two right answers but still stuck. Situation presented me with the option to continue to work with an ordinary diploma certificate or opt out to go to the university, I had longed dream of.

Just like the four lepers who were left with the options of entry the Aramean camp in search of greener pasture, but would have to face death! or they remain in their country and die of hunger!

I asked myself many unanswered questions. The words of those leper played my thoughts, ‘why sit we here till we die!’ I asked myself too, why sit I here, till I fade.

Success smiled at me, for the first time after many attempts to pursue a university degree. but, failure seems to be around the corner to make jest of me.

Leaving the job a stipend is sure of, for school where there is no finance for, is like telling a blind man to compete with Usain Bolt.

I cried, but my tears would not appease the gods of fortune, to send me helpers. I really desired the university wall, just like I desire to work in the banking hall.

I cried, sometimes I regretted coming to this world, I blamed my parents for bringing me to this world, to suffer for things that should naturally be my entitlement.

Just as I was sank in the deep thought of what to do, that clammy morning, I was greeted with another congratulatory, news to start work with one of the big guns bank, Skye bank on the Island. God! I shouted. another ethical dilemma.

‘I want to go to school.’ I was left with many right answers, but with only one answer to be given. I resolute, to resign and go to school, it would be a dilemma, because the finance isn’t available.

If I settle for the employement, there will the money to cater for myself and my aging parents and siblings, but there will be limitation to how far, I go in the value-market. ‘Oh, Allah help me.’ Was the only word I could reiterate.

Finally, I left work for school. Oh, God! I used to think life was a bed rose, until I left my job, to know that responsibility, isn’t a child’s play.

The stipend from my job was sufficient to foot my opening school bills. The problem was now, continuing and surviving.

I knew, no one would help me, if I didn’t help myself. I had to look for something to parlay and see myself live fine in school.

A friend told me to start with a bet, he gave me the assurance that I would see the double amount of my money, if I could predict correctly weekend football matches.

I went home jubilating, thinking of how to start the weekend with my new remedy to hardship, bet.

I parrot back the information, when my nursery school yoruba rhymes, sip into my ears ‘Ohun tí abá sisé fún ní pé lówó eni’ otherwise; only things we worked/laboured for last longer.’

The rhymes, couldn’t be wrong. It was a synopsis of my mother’s philosophy of life, ‘Isé ni ògùn ìsé’ otherwise, ‘work is the antidote to poverty.’ Stealing was the only option I wouldn’t have considered.

It was a sunny afternoon, that day on campus, the golden petals of the sun shone directly to my eye balls, I used my right hand to shade my eyes to see further. It was a gentle pat on my back, it was Àdió, my secondary school mate.

I was shocked, because it was rumored that he was reprimanded for stealing; no one would have argue against that, because of his character then(while, we were in secondary school). We hugged each as I stole gaze at him.

‘I am a 400level student of History and International studies.’ He said, in a tone buried in pride. I marvelled at his achievement, because then, I never thought a pap will ever sally from his black pot.

I told him I am just a new student in the school, but I was quick to tell him my challenges, because he was looking kempt and it was obvious he was heading for a delivery. He asked me, to meet him in his house, which he described.

We departed with a firm handshake, with our eyes peering into each others. My mind told me, he remembered how his secondary school ‘crush’ left him for me(who knows) The midday alarm met me in his room and parlour self-contained.

His room was tastefully decorated. A resemblance of the eye-catchy room arrangement in hollywood. He welcomed me, with a warm hug, with the scent of his perfume naturalising the odour from my armpit.

I didn’t mind sitting on the floor as I narrate how I desperately need a means of survival, in school. He beamed, and asked me to sit on the sofa. He promised to introduce me to his friend, who was into catering services.

I met him, and that was how I started moving from one junket to another every weekend, as a service boy. I travelled as far as kogi, Ekiti, Sokoto, with the catering services establishment. I parlayed the little I get to meet my end means.

On week days, I will go in search of construction site, and work as a laborer. At the end of the labour, I get paid but my body aches.

Balancing school with work was a hell of work to do. At a point, I considered quitting schooling because I was under a pressure, I thought it was too tough for me to handle.

My father’s word occurred to me ‘you don’t relent if you’re not sure of the prize yet.’ I persist.

It was not a rosy journey, but determination stirred me. Even when it was time to run for a political post, I did. Though, I looked down on myself but people around me, that was aware of the potentate in me, encouraged me.

I emerged as the president of my department. Double work!. I no longer think for myself, I think for also, hundreds of heads.

Still with my labourer’s job and the catering service job, I was able to see myself through, not relegating the impact of my friends, who we coached children together during holidays, around Surulere axis(Lawanson), Lagos.

When I remember the story of my life, which words can’t capture, I cry.

But, today 30th, Sept, 2017. I am a graduate with a grade that every students will love to have. Who says a dream is too hard to achieve, when determination is there?

Never give up on your dreams, your life is an epistle others are waiting for to read and write theirs too, when you remember this you won’t give up. I am a success!

Are you motivated?

Parents, students hail ASUU for calling off strike

September 19, 2017 0
University students have expressed happiness over the decision by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its strike. Some of the students told newsmen in Kano on Tuesday that they were happy to hear that the union had called off the five-week old strike.

Al’Amin Lawal, a 200 level student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said he was short of words to express his happiness over the new development.

“I cannot express my joy since I heard that ASUU had called off the strike because I was about to finish my semester examination when the lecturers commenced the strike,” he said.

He commended the union for the decision, saying it would enable them complete their examinations and move to the next level. Musa Bala, a 300 level student of Bayero University Kano, described ASUU decision as a welcome development, as students would now resume normal academic activities.

He, however, called on the Federal Government to keep to the agreements reached between it and the lecturers in order not to disrupt academic activities in the universities in future. “The Federal Government should try as much as possible to keep to the promises made to the lecturers as that will go along way in ensuring uninterrupted academic activities in our universities,” Bala said. Similarly, most of the parents who spoke to newsmen on the issue expressed gratitude to Allah for making it possible for the government and lecturers to reach an agreement on the strike.

They, however, advised the lecturers to always go for dialogue in resolving dispute rather than resorting to total strike.

Newsmen report that the ASUU President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, on Monday in Minna directed all university lecturers to resume work this Tuesday.

Last year, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) approved a new post-UTME screening system for all applicants seeking entry to various tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It was called JAMB Point-System.

This was necessary following the discarding of the Post-UTME test by the Ministry of Education. It is expected that the new admission screening system will become fully effective in the admission exercise at the 2017/2018 academic session.

After completion of the JAMB UTME review in 2017, we would like to inform UNN INFO, the candidates and the general public about how to calculate the UTME screening results with their O'nevel residues (WAEC and NECO) ,

Before you begin, note the following information about 2017 JAMB UTME;

UTME exam questions vary depending on the candidate.
Candidates who count over 250 receive the approval of JAMB in the institution of choice.

2017 JAMB CBT lasts 3 years for candidates with a score of 200 and more
A scholarship can be awarded to candidates over 280 and more in various institutions for a 4-year program.

New Message UTME Screening System:

Note: Before a candidate is a candidate for screening, he must have received a preliminary approval from JAMB. The JAMB Approval Checker Portal will soon be open for this process.

The second process is the point system, where the shot depends on the candidate score. Details of the system are listed below;

1. Candidates who present only one result containing their relevant topics will already receive 10 points. The examination could be NECO, WASSCE, November / December WASSCE etc., but each candidate who receives two sessions only 2 points. This means that candidates with only one result are advantageous, but only slightly.

2. O’ Level grades has it’s equivalent grade points as; A (A1) = 6 marks, B (B1, B2, B3) = 4 marks, C (C4, C5, C6) = 3 marks, so the better the candidates’ grades, the better his or her chances of securing admission this year.

3. UTME scores, where each score range has its equivalent point can be summarised thus, 180-200=20-23 marks, 200-250=24-33 points, 251-300=34-43, 300-400=44-60 points.

4. Each category would contain five JAMB results per point added. Eg. a candidate with 180-185 gets 20 points, while a candidate with 186-190 gets 21 points.

How To Calculate Admission Screening Scores:

Sittings: Assuming you have all your required O’level subjects in one sitting, you already have 10 marks.

O’Level: Let’s say you have 1A, 5Bs and 3Cs in your O’level result (WAEC/ NECO/ GCE), then you have, (1×6) + (5×4) + (3×3) = 35 Points.
JAMB Score: Then, say you scored 250 in JAMB UTME, you get 33 Points.
To get the total point, you sum everything together (i.e: Sittings + O’level + Jamb Score).

This implies that – 10 + 35 + 33 = 78 Points. If the cut-off mark for your course of choice in a particular school is below 70, then will be admitted into that institution.

Note:

(i) The culture and the less developed education would still be used for admission to universities in the country.
(ii) Admission to earnings includes 45% of the total number of candidates for a given course, the course is 35%, and the less developed education (ELD) and the personallists contain the rest.
(iii) Cuts are published by the organs this year in the form of brands and non-brands.
(iv) The point system for direct entry will soon be published.
